Paint The Town Chic: Beauty
Beauty
Happy National Lipstick Day! There's a celebration for everything these days it seems, but I am happily celebrating a product that hasn't gotten much use these quarantine days. In the past, I wouldn't have considered myself the biggest lipstick fan (I've always been drawn to mascara/lashes.) But these days I love how a splash of lipstick can make you feel so put together.

So today, I wanted to share a roundup of some of my favorite brands lipsticks that I've discovered over the years. There are a lot of factors that I look for, including shade, pigmentation, ingredients, how long it lasts, scent and even packaging!

Mood Matcher
The weekend before quarantine began was my last adventure in the real world. I attended an event hosted by Mood Matcher, which was my first introduction to the brand. At that event, I discovered my new favorite nude power combo, the Matte Lip Pencil in Mauve and the Lacquer Gloss in I'm Barely Exposed. This is my go-to when I don't want color, but I want to look polished.

Bite Beauty
Over the years, I've tried quite a few Bite Beauty products and they consistently are a hit for me. I love their clean formulas and their range of shades. This was one of my favorite lipsticks that was discontinued, but they have a beautiful range of lip crayons.

Ga-De
This is a brand that I was introduced to a few years ago and I tried out two of their Idyllic Soft Satin Lipsticks (see the full review about this brand here.) In the middle here is shade Wine Divine which is one of my favorite rosy shades, and on the right is Bare Chic, a pretty nude pink. Ga-De also has new products since my last post and I cannot wait to check them out.

Clarins

Lately, I've been loving Clarins Lip Oils, some of which do leave a splash of color. But they also have lipsticks, and I especially loved this plum shade that faded into a pretty lip stain. When it comes to darker shades, this is always a worry since I can't always reapply.

NYX
I love NYX for their wide range of products and shades, as well as their affordable prices. You can pretty much find any color you're looking for within the NYX line! I love their matte liquid lipsticks, which are a little on the drying side, but the shades are so pretty. The Lip Butters are great too!

Maybelline
And I started this post with a lippie crayon from Maybelline in a beautiful brick red, a color obsession from the fall that I've been holding onto. Maybelline is another of those brands that has such a wide range of product and I've loved everything I've tried.

I touched on some of my go-to shades, but I'll have to work on another post about lip color shades and how to pick out colors that work for your skin tone! Until then, I'd love to know what your favorite lippie brands are!

The number one benefit I look for in a skincare routine is glowing skin. There's something about a glow that makes my skin feel healthy and fresh.

I was recently introduced to Riovea, a J-Beauty brand (from Japan) that uses real ingredients in their formulas. That is right up my alley so I knew I wanted to learn more. The line I tried is the Illuminating Series, which of course is known for brightening.

The Riovea products I tried included the Illuminating Cleanser, Illuminating Toner, Illuminating Serum and Illuminating Cream. This set worked together using the "TrioActive Formula", a combination of medicinal plants like neem that contain a variety of amazing benefits. Aside from skin brightening, this collection helps with anti-aging, smoothing and softening skin, reducing pore size, protecting skin from free radicals and against everyday environmental stress and more.

I loved how gentle this collection was on my skin. I could see my skin looking brighter just after a few uses, but the effects were more prominent the more I used it. I liked that these products, especially the Cleanser, did not dry out my skin. I hate the feeling of dry skin after washing (which is not the sign of a good product!) Everything absorbed quickly into my skin and there was no greasy feel. This collection is also unscented which is a nice benefit for those who prefer that, or tend to have allergic reactions.

The order that I used this set in was first starting out with the Cleanser (but make note to remove any makeup prior to using as this is not a makeup remover), followed by the Toner, Serum and Moisturizer. I wait a few minutes for each product to dry and soak into my skin before moving to the next step.

The line is cruelty free and made with clean ingredients (and comes in at 95% natural!) I appreciate that each product lists out the percentage of natural products, so it's very clear how important that is!

The packaging is also sleek and elegant, which is a perfect fit for the line! I'm a sucker for pretty packaging.

This was my first introduction to J-Beauty. So far I'm a fan of what I see and I will be on the lookout for other brands! Have your tried Riovea or any other J-Beauty brands? Please let me know your thoughts and any recommendations!

Have you ever customized your skincare products?

I have an appreciation for brands that tailor products to each individual person. I've seen this done with haircare and makeup, but this was my first encounter with skincare. Proven made the process really easy with a quiz asking questions from skin concerns to lifestyle to hometown climate. Keep reading for a special discount on your Proven order!
Once my order was placed, it took under 2 weeks to craft my formulas and arrive at my front door! The set included a personalized Cleanser, SPF and Night Cream. These three products last 60 days and cover the most basic skincare routine (cleanse, protect, repair) that is a must to protect skin. Proven says no other skincare products are needed, that these 3 together are enough to take care of your skin, which is great for a minimalist routine!
The package included a recap of my skin analysis as well as detailed information about my products. For those interested in ingredients and effectiveness, like me, these cards are so helpful! It's important to note that Proven products are clean with no bad chemicals, parabens, etc. They do not test on animals and the brand is ocean safe.
From my research, I knew the brand and their mission was great, but what about the products themselves? I'm still in the process of using them, and I honestly can't judge effectiveness until a month of using, but I am enjoying the results so far. My skin feels great. It feels clean and moisturized. I like that these are unscented and the products don't feel greasy when applied.

I will have to report back once I've gone through my supply. Follow along on my Instagram!
Plus, how sleek is this packaging? Love the look of it on my shelf!

The skin around our eyes is one of the most sensitive areas on our body, so of course it deserves a little extra TLC. It's also one of the areas I neglect the most, partly because I don't typically have deep bags or dark spots. That doesn't stop me from indulging in preventative care though.

I've been incorporating some under-eye prep into my routine thanks to VII Code, which I've written about before (see here.)  This time I tried the VIIcode O2.0 Oxygen Hydrating Eye Spray and the O2M Oxygen Eye Mask for dark circles.
VIIcode O2.0 Oxygen Hydrating Eye Spray
I was particularly curious about the Hydrating Eye Spray. I use a toner all over my face as part of my skincare routine and I'm imagined the Eye Spray to be used in a similar way. One of the star ingredients is EOPE, which helps to revitalize skin and improve skin vitality.

So how do you use this spray you ask? I used it both day and night. In the morning, I sprayed under my eye and gently pressed the product into the skin to fully absorb the magical ingredients! I used one spritz, but VII Code suggests two to three sprays. I then finished off the routine with a brightening eye cream.

At night, I sprayed again, but followed it up with the Eye Mask!

Why use this spray? It's meant to relax skin and relieve exhaustion from daily life stress and pollution! It was also refreshing, especially on hot days like we've been having.
Going back to those eye masks, I tried the Eye Masks targeting dark circles. As I mentioned above, my dark circles are not too pronounced, but I do not get enough sleep and I am constantly stressed for various reasons, all which contribute to skin distress. Those in their 40s and 50s may have more pronounced dark circles, and with that in mind, I have been more mindful of preventative care.

How to use these masks? They are actually very easy to use! These little patches are fitted to sit right under the eye (and my glasses fit over the masks as I was finishing my nighttime routine which was handy!) The masks are lush and moisturizing, but the formula does not drip. The formula is made with natural ingredients like grapeseed oil, seaweed and white tea and is alcohol-free.

There is very little scent and I LOVED the cooling sensation that I first felt after applying. But the true surprise was that these did not move or fall off - and I move around a lot in my sleep. The patches are meant to be left for no more than 8 hours. VII Code suggests using 2-3 times a week to see the best results over 3 boxes of masks.

This newer routine has really benefitted my eye area. My skin has a glow and it feels more refreshed and youthful. I believe that all of the products I'm using have contributed to this change and I will continue to use the spray daily and the eye mask once a week.

Remember, it's never too late to start a skin care regimen and don't forget to pamper the eye area. It's worth it in the long run!

Finding a forever nail spot has proven nearly impossible...until now. I have been to so many places in search of the perfect manicure in Philly. Even manicures from places with stellar reviews would chip within 3 days - and I'm talking regular AND gel manicures!

When Mi Cumbia reached out to try their services, the answer was an immediate yes. I had seen Mi Cumbia, an organic nail salon, in passing and was always curious to try them because of their commitment to using non-toxic products and their great reviews.
Booking an appointment was so easy, and everything was done quickly through text. From my first interaction, they were so friendly and accommodating so I knew I was in good hands.
Because of my issues with gel nails lasting, I chose to try the Shellac Manicure to see how that would compare. However they had an excellent selection of regular polishes, including shades from some of my favorite brands like Zoya. I usually expect a smaller section for other manicures but they had a pretty good selection of shellac shades as well.

In case you're wondering, like me, Shellac is similar to a gel manicure, but is a semi-permanent polish. It's thinner than gel and lasts 2 weeks, whereas gel is *supposed* to last up to 3 weeks. Shellac is said to be easier to remove (I'll comment on that when the time comes!) and is less harmful to the nail. I wanted to also note that Shellac does not have a non-toxic option at the moment.
My manicurist was Rosa who was so friendly and she did an amazing job. She took her time and was thorough with all parts of the manicure. One of the things I hate is when the experience is rushed, and my Mi Cumbia manicure was nothing like that. I really appreciated the little touches, like the mango butter with lavender that was used during the hand massage.
Something else that was included with the service was coffee or tea. I'm not usually a coffee drinker but this Columbian coffee was some of the best coffee I've ever had. Again, these little touches all add up and make a huge difference. The space itself was also very cute and had a relaxing vibe.
I chose to write my review 10 days after my appointment to see how my manicure held up....and it's perfect. Not one chip, crack, nothing except for the little bits of nail growth that can't be avoided. I'm shocked at how well this manicure has held up. A Salinas manicura (regular manicure) is $41 and the Shellac manicura is $44 (and worth every penny!) I cannot wait to try the pedicure next. The salon also offers waxing services which I'll have to check out as well.

This is one hidden gem that I can't wait to tell everyone about! Learn more about Mi Cumbia and their offerings here.

Special thanks to Mi Cumbia for the complimentary service. All opinions shared above are my own.

It's been a week since I attended my first BeautyCon in NYC and it was such a fun experience! BeautyCon is a 2 day beauty expo where you can meet brands, try samples, listen to panel discussions, take all the Insta-worthy photos and shop, shop, shop!

I spent about 2 hours on Saturday and 5 hours on Sunday checking out the event. I did not take full advantage of everything that was available, but I still had a great time. Because of the large venue and amount of vendors, it's best to come up with a game plan of places you absolutely want to check out first. For me, I wanted to check out brands I had never tried/heard of and spots with cute Insta-worthy displays.

Saturday I was on a time constraint so I mostly scanned the expo and checked out some lines that were moving quickly. The first booth I hit up was Aveda. How can you go wrong with a cherry tree display + a swing?! Aveda gave trial samples of their Cherry Almond body wash and lotion (which smell amazing in case you were wondering!)
Next I got an application of these Llui Llui gel nail stickers. They were so easy to apply and there was such a cute collection of colors/prints. BeautyCon was the brand's debut so it was exciting to be one of the first to try them out.
After getting the lay of the land, I was more strategic on Sunday. I really wanted to get my hair done by Sexy Hair, so that was at the top of my list. I loved the cute festival styles they were doing. The line was long and slow but they did a great job. In addition to their cute styling station, they were giving full sized glitter hair sprays, which are a fun festival/summer detail.
I quickly browsed some of the other booths. Target has such a cute display based on astrological signs (I'm a sucker for that) and were giving out clear shoppers. Love Beauty Planet (one of my fav brands) had the coolest display where if you recycled anything, they gave you a free product and tote. I was curious about Sol de Janeiro (I've heard great things about their Bum Bum Cream) and they were giving out little samples.

I was actually surprised by some of the large brands that didn't give anything out. Overall, I thought most brands were going for the Instagrammable moments/photo opps rather than product.

Interested in attending this type of event, but don't know what to expect? While this my first time attending an expo as a guest, a few years ago I volunteered at GenIpsy and I worked both The Well Summit and FounderMade while at a previous job. I've picked up a few tips here and there and wanted to share them with you.
Tips For Navigating Expos

Attend the first day of the expo for the best bang for your buck.
The best deals/giveaways/samples will be available on the first day. I know brands that were giving our product on the first day were not doing so on Sunday. Additionally, I noticed another brand have games to win product on Saturday and Sunday they were strictly selling.

Bring a friend!
This was the first time that I went solo and while I still had a good time, I didn't enjoy everything, especially all of the amazing photo opps, as much as I would've if I went with a friend.

Don't wear heels.
Of course you want to look cute, but heels are not the best option to spend an 8 hour day on concrete floors.

If you're looking for free product, hit up the big brands first.
Brands like Maybelline, CVS, and Sally Beauty were giving out free product whereas smaller brands were not. Be prepared for the long lines though.

But, experiences are worth more.
Samples/product is great, but things that you can't buy elsewhere are worth more in my opinion! I loved getting my hair done by Sexy and I noticed another brand doing the cutest caricatures! Again, the lines were super long, but I would recommend hitting these experiences first.

People are going to sell to you.
I knew that this was going to be true for many of the booths I visited. I had the worst experience with one of the hair tool brands that was at BeautyCon. The man I was speaking with literally had a hissy fit when I didn't immediately buy a $300 straightener that he tried to sell me after after curling 2 pieces of hair, so he stomped off. So unprofessional, and I don't think I'd buy from this brand no matter how good their product is. This was a rare occurrence, but keep in mind that many of booths are only there to sell product.

Be polite.
This is such a simple thing, but I can't tell you how many times I came across a rude attendee. Kindness goes a long way and may even get you more freebies.

Feel free to comment below, email me or DM me on Insta if you have any other questions! If you've attended an expo before, I'd love to know your thoughts!

Thanks to BeautyCon for having me as a guest! All opinions shared above are my own.

There are many products that I will try at least once, but I will always put my put my foot down on 2-in-1 products.  No thank you!  So obviously when I heard about cleansing conditioners I was skeptical to give them a try.  However after I read more about them, I was willing to give them a chance.

What is a cleansing conditioner you ask? It's a conditioner that contains cleansing ingredients minus the chemicals and sulfates that a 2-in-1 product has.  Essentially it cuts down your hair care routine without sacrificing results.

Why Should You Use A Cleansing Conditioner?

  • If you have curly or wavy hair because it doesn't strip natural oils from the hair.
  • You wash your hair daily and are looking for a gentle cleansing product.
  • You use heat styling products (I found it easier to straighten my hair after using this.)
  • You don't want the chemicals, sulfates and all the bad ingredients in traditional hair products.
  • You want a simple, no-fuss shower routine.
I typically wash my hair 2-3 times a week, and I've been using this for about a month.  I do find that I use more product than before (but keep in mind that this is both shampoo and conditioner.)  Sometimes I wash twice depending on if I used a lot of styling products or if it's been longer between washes.

If you're wondering what my hair looked like, well here is it.  I used minimal styling products, but my hair was less frizzy and felt healthy and shiny - all things I look for.
Now that you know more about cleansing conditioners, let's talk about UnWash.  I really enjoyed their Bio Cleansing Conditioner.  As mentioned, it left my hair feeling soft and shiny.  I don't have worry about this stripping my color since it is sulfate free.  And not to mention the wonderful light, clean scent!  I also loved their sleek packaging and bottle shape.

The verdict?  As with all good things, patience is key to achieving results.  I've been using this for less than a month and still find my roots to be somewhat oily and I don't get that clean feeling as I do with a traditional shampoo and conditioner combo.  In general, it takes a few weeks for hair to get used to a change, especially one so drastic as this.  I'm willing to continue using it as the reviews I've read really praise this for curly hair, but I want to incorporate a scalp cleansing product once a week for more of a deep clean.  I will be sharing more about the importance of scalp care soon, stay tuned.

If you're looking to incorporate this into your haircare routine, I suggest gradually introducing this and using this routine once a week.

Would you trying a cleansing conditioner?

Something I've really gotten into perfecting (partly thanks to my last job in the beauty industry) is my skincare routine.  I truly enjoy the ritual of getting ready in the morning and finishing out the day before bed.  I have two separate routines and I will be sharing more about them in the next few weeks, but there is one new-to-me product in particular that I've enjoyed trying out these past few weeks - the VIIcode Oxygen Eye Mask.

You may be questioning what this eye mask is all about - and don't worry because I did too.   The VII Eye Masks are little pads fit right under your eyes and are meant to be worn for 8 hours (a full night's sleep.)  Filled with potent antioxidants that work overnight, these pads will help minimize wrinkles/fine lines and the under eye area will be refreshed and moisturized.  While I am fortunate to not suffer from fine lines, I'm a true believer that it's NEVER too early to begin an anti-aging regimen.

For $55, you receive a set of 6 masks, to be used 2 to 3 times a week.  VIIcode suggests a series of full course series of 3 boxes (18 masks) for best results.
So now that you know more about the eye mask themselves, I want to share more about my experience with them.  The masks are pretty easy to use.  All you have to do is cleanse your face and apply the masks, so that is exactly what I did!  The first time I put them on, I was confused about where they went, even with the diagram.
Pro tip:  Don't apply these too close to the lower lash!

In all honestly I am not the hugest fan of sheet masks, so I was worried about how this would feel.  But it actually didn't bother me too much, especially because the masks are soaked with formula and don't move around once they are on the eyes.  It was definitely a strange feeling at first - cold and tingly - but you get used to them over time.  They also have a light scent which you can definitely smell all night.

As I mentioned above, as someone who doesn't have fine lines it may not seem like an obvious change.  But I am a night owl and tend not to be as well rested as I want on weekdays.  These masks help me feel refreshed and minimize any bags I may get due to not sleeping well (which I need to work on!)
It truly feels like a mini-spa treatment that I can do in the privacy of my own home.  Ladies, self-care is so important and treatments like the VIIcode Eye Masks are pampering but serve an important purpose for all of us who are always on the go.

Pro Tip: Put the masks in the fridge prior to using for more of a cooling sensation.

My new favorite thing is customization.  It's something that's common for things like food and drink but now the beauty industry has been picking up on it more and more.

But let's take a moment to talk hair.  No two people have the same exact hair type, which is why customized products are the way to go.  I recently learned about Formulate, a new service that engineers the perfect haircare duo based on your hair type, location and lifestyle!  Keep scrolling to enter a giveaway to be the first to try Formulate!

This brief video gives an overview of how Formulate works!
To create your formulas, you take an extensive quiz which questions you on everything from hair color and type, scalp, current haircare routine, and what you're looking for with your hair products.  The quiz was definitely eye opening.  I didn't realize so many factors can affect your beauty routine.  I even got a snapshot of my hometown and how that affects my hair.
This is a snapshot of some of my hair concerns and the scent that I chose for my formulas.
Hopefully you're just as excited as I am about Formulate.  Now I'm excited to share TWO offers with you.  The first is a giveaway to be the first to try Formulate and receive your own customized shampoo and conditioner duo!

The next is a unique code that gives you access to purchase your own formulations right now.  Since this service is new, it is not open to the public quite yet.  This code also includes inclusion into the Founding Customers group where you receive future discounts, first trials and co-creation opportunities (like helping pick out new scents!)  Send me an email at paintthetownchic @ gmail.com or DM me on Insta for a code, first come first served!

I cannot wait to receive and try my customized shampoo and conditioner.  I'll be sharing more once I get it.

Ladies, you may have noticed that I'm a fan of subscription boxes.  I've tried quite a few of them, but I'm always looking for the newest ones to check out.  Enter Rose War Panty Power - if the name doesn't intrigue you than this review (and discount code) will so read on...
Rose War Panty Power March Box c/o

Let's face it, there's a certain time of month that no one looks forward to.  This monthly subscription box is meant to "empower you during that magical time of month."  Each box is filled with 2 cute pairs of undies, pick-me-up gifts, and 14 organic pads and/or tampons customized to your preferences through a brief quiz!

And of course the necessities!  The box can be customized with pads, tampons or a mix of both.  I'm happy to see organic products in this box.

Each box also comes with some extras, like beauty, skincare and chocolate samples. Befine is one of my favorite subscription box discoveries so I was happy to see this!
